There are 5 basic weapons: short sword, youth long sword, adult long sword, staff, and tanto with shield. The youth long sword is excellent as a one handed weapon in the 2 sword style for adult use. For 2 sword style, any combination of swords and tantos may be used. When sparring or practicing sparring, you must wear full protective gear. We endorse the weapons made by Tiger Claw, Inc. because they are well-made and reasonably priced.

  • Practice weapons have a pvc core all the way through them and are designed for endurance. They are heavier and stronger for daily use and their extra weight helps build endurance and strength.
  • Sparring weapons are designed with no core in the last 6-8 inches, making them very soft for striking during sparring. Using the sparring weapons for constant daily practice results in their breaking down much sooner than practice weapons.

Protective gear is forearm guard, shin guard, torso protector, and groin protector. Minimum protective gear for staff is hand, wrist and forearm protector, helmet and face mask, torso protector, and for female participants, some form of breast shield.Optional for protective gear for staff is shin guard.
